    Description

This is a Medallic Art Co. New York bronze medal of the Harlan Fiske Stone Fellowship of Columbia University Law School. I believed the medal was issued in the early 1970s because Medallic Arts Co was in New York at that time. The medal front has the 3 dimensional bust portrait of Harlan Fiske Stone with his name and the dates 1872-1972. The back has in raised lettering Harlan Fiske Stone Fellowship Columbia Law School. Around this is listed Stone's accomplishments-- Lawyer-Dean-Attorney General-Associate Justice-Chief Justice. On the back at the very bottom are impressed the initials E.P., presumably the artist. Harlan Fiske Stone ahs been closely associated to Columbia University Law School, is one of the most illustrious graduates, and the Law School is justifiably proud of this connection. Medallic Arts appears to be one of the most prominent, if not the most prominent, maker of commemorative medals. The medal measures approximately 3 1/2" in diameter. Its thickness varies with the sculpture but the rim is mostly 1/4". The medal weighs approximately 14 ounces. The medal has some scratches on the lower back. There is a small indent on the front left edge just above the shoulder.  There is some color variation. On the back there is some color variation where the stand meets the medal. I have never cleaned or treated the medal. At most, it has been dusted.  See Photos. The stand came with it.  It is approximately 2 3/4" tall and 2 1/4" wide at the widest part.  It has some rub marks where the medal has rubbed against it.  A dear friend gave this to me in 1987 when I became a judge.   He graduated from the law school approximately 30 years before I did.  We worked together for several years and remained friends until his death. This has always had a special meaning to me.  I am downsizing and sadly must part with mementos. Non-smoking household.
