Description
This lithograph by the illustrious “Spy” (Sir Leslie Ward) was published in the British magazine Vanity Fair (June 21, 1873). It is no. 64 (“The Tichborne Case”)in the famous series “Men of the Day”.
The subject is the barrister Mr. Henry Hawkins, Q. C. (1817–1907), later a judge of the High Court of Justice. Mr. Hawkins was ennobled as 1st Baron Brampton in 1899. A biographical sketch is found on the reverse.
Mr. Hawkins is pictured in profile, bewigged and arguing a case, dangling his spectacles to emphasize some point of law.
The print lithograph measures 14.5" x 8.25" (37 x 21 cm). It is enclosed in a chrome frame floating between two pieces of glass. The dimensions of the frame are 17" x 14" (43.2 x 35.6 cm).
The print is in very good condition, without creases or tears. At one time, it was hung up with tape, patches of which remain on the reverse in the top corners, but they do not obscure any of the text.
The dark patches that appear in the photographs are reflections of the photographer; they are not on the print or the glass.
