    Description
1848 - Bond for Man who Furnished "Spirituous Liquor" to a Another Man's Enslaved Worker*
A bond requiring a white man to appear in court on the charge that he furnished “spirituous liquor” to another man’s enslaved worker.  Various persons.  Forsyth County, Georgia: 1848. Unbound.
In this one-page document, bondsmen pledge 0 as a guarantee that:
“Adam Campbell shall personally appear before the Superior Court when held for said County on the fourth Monday in August next then and there to answer . . . for and concerning the offence of a Misdemeanor for furnishing a certain [enslaved worker] by the name of Buc the property of one Captain McQuering with spirituous liquor for his own use."
Although during the earliest days of enslavement in the American colonies, enslaved workers were permitted to use alcohol and beer in ceremonies and rituals that they had practiced in Africa, as their numbers increased, colonial governments began passing laws regulating the practice. By the middle of the 18th century, most colonies were severely limiting  access to liquor “based on the notion that enslaved workers were too irresponsible to be trusted with the use of alcohol or fear that enslaved workers would be less accepting of the conditions of their servitude, more difficult to control, and more prone to violence. [Concern regarding] mass drunkenness and potential revolt was heightened following Nat Turner’s and Denmark Vessey’s revolts.” (See Christmom’s “Historical Overview of Alcohol in the African American Community” in
    Journal of Black Studies
    , Jan. 1995.)
From the size of Campbell’s bond, it would appear that he may have previously been convicted for the same crime as in 1848, the Georgia Code specified that if any
“person whatsoever shall sell to or furnish any  . . . spirituous liquor, wines, cider, or any intoxicating liquors for his own use, or for the purpose of sale, such person so offending shall, upon conviction thereof, pay a fine of not less than ten dollars nor more than fifty dollars, for the first offence, and upon a second conviction, to be subject to a fine and imprisonment in the common jail of the county, at the discretion of the court, not to exceed sixty days of imprisonment and five hundred dollars fine. . . .”
Rather scarce. At the time of this listing, there are two similar documents for sale in the trade, and the Rare Book Hub shows two have been sold at auction. OCLC shows three similar documents are held in institutional collections.
Sorry for the repetitive use of the phrase "enslaved worker" but eBay finds the actual terms to be offensive.

    Payment
PayPal is preferred for both US and international payments.
Other methods of payment may be possible.
    Shipping
    Domestic Shipping.
Most orders are shipped to locations in the US at no additional cost. If not, shipping costs are set at a flat rate on an item-by-item basis.
Media mail shipping--when available and appropriate--is inexpensive but may take between two and four weeks, especially if delivery is to the west coast. If a quick delivery is important to you, please request USPS Priority Mail or some other expedited delivery service before paying.
International Shipping. International shipping is usually done through the eBay Global Shipping Program.  I know that this can be expensive, but I've switched to this method because I've had too many claims of non-receipt by international buyers.  If you contact me in advance of purchase it may be possible for me to ship directly to you.
If I ship directly, I will only ship overseas using a trackable method; this can be expensive, and it is non-negotiable.  Also, I will only enter true information on customs forms; if you  have a problem paying your nation's customs fees, that is beteen you and your government, I have nothing to do with it.
If you pay by PayPal, I will only ship to the shipping address specified by PayPal.
All shipments are covered by my business insurance at my expense, however if you would like to purchase additional USPS insurance at your expense, let me know, and I'll adjust your invoice accordingly.
